More tests do not always mean better care

A health check can be a valuable way to understand your risk of future illness, but not all checks are equal. A long list of tests is not the same as a useful assessment.

The most helpful health check is tailored to your age, family history, lifestyle and any symptoms you have, and explained to you properly afterwards.

What is a health check?

A health check is a structured review of your overall health. It usually includes a discussion of your medical and family history, lifestyle, blood pressure, weight and a selection of blood tests, followed by a conversation about what the results mean for you.

The aim is to pick up early warning signs, understand your risk of conditions such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes, and agree a practical plan to reduce that risk.

Which blood tests are commonly included?

  • A full blood count can show anaemia and may point to infection or other blood conditions.
  • Kidney and liver function tests check how well these organs are working and can flag problems before symptoms appear.
  • A cholesterol profile helps estimate your risk of heart disease and stroke.
  • HbA1c or a glucose test checks for diabetes and prediabetes, which often cause no symptoms in the early stages.
  • Thyroid function can explain tiredness, weight change, palpitations and low mood.
  • Iron stores (ferritin), vitamin B12 and vitamin D may be added where there is a reason to look at them.

Not everyone needs every test. The right selection depends on you.

Why do blood pressure and heart risk matter?

High blood pressure usually causes no symptoms, yet it is one of the biggest preventable risk factors for heart attack and stroke. It is quick and simple to measure.

Blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, smoking, weight and family history together give a much better picture of your cardiovascular risk than any single number. For some people at higher risk, further heart tests such as a coronary calcium score may be worth discussing.

Does a private check replace NHS screening?

No. NHS screening programmes for cervical, breast and bowel cancer, and the NHS Health Check for eligible adults, remain important and should be taken up when you are invited.

A private health check is best seen as an addition that gives you more time, more detail and a personalised discussion, not a substitute for these programmes.

Can a normal result be falsely reassuring?

Yes. A normal set of results is good news, but it does not guarantee that nothing is wrong, and borderline results need context to interpret. This is why the consultation matters as much as the blood tests themselves.

A good health check should leave you understanding what your results mean, what to do about them and when to review them again.

When should I see a doctor instead of booking a check?

New or persistent symptoms should be assessed promptly rather than left for a routine check. These include unexplained weight loss, a lasting change in bowel habit, blood in your urine or stools, a persistent cough, a new lump, or ongoing breathlessness.

Chest pain, especially with breathlessness, sweating or pain spreading to the arm or jaw, is an emergency. Call 999.

A health check that fits you

At Family Doctor Group, our GPs take the time to understand your history and your concerns before deciding which tests are worth doing. We can arrange blood tests, explain the results in a consultation and, where needed, refer you for further investigation.

The best health check is not the longest one. It is the one that answers the right questions for you.
